They and their family members can be safe from exploitations from different traders and middlemen with functional literacy and basic information. Educated girls and women also come out of clutches of taboos and misinformation in their society harmful to them and their families.

There is strong evidence of environmental degradation in the community, particularly in rural and urban areas. Climate change is having adverse effects on the vulnerable groups like small landholders to be partners or farmers, daily wage laborers which are the main source of livelihood for villagers. Erratic rainfalls, very high temperatures during summer, unpredictable seasonal changes are having negative effects on agriculture and the labor class people. We are doing our bit by trying to make the future citizens sensitive about the environmental degradation, loss of forests, climate change effects, and the methodologies and ways to cope with the changing situation. We are encouraging the school children in particular and the villagers, in general, to go for forestation and renovation of degraded forest land. We are encouraging the children on the plantation and distributing fruit-bearing trees to be planted in their backyards. We are also promoting the kitchen garden concept in the school children and their families where they are having a range of vegetables in small patches of land in the back of their homestead land. This is helping the children get better nutrition and lessening the burden of purchasing items from the market. There was also increased awareness among the people and students of the importance of Agri/Horti/forestry and its value of demotion of farm production, natural resource management, social mobilization, and economic upliftment.

Self Help Group For Economic Empowerment Of Women:

Over the last few years people’s participation and empowerment have become the buzzwords in rural development and local planning in the context self-help group (SHG) has emerged as the most successful strategy, in the process of participatory development and empowerment of women. The rural women are the marginalized groups of our society. Due to the pretenses of socioeconomic constraints in the rural areas, women’s potential for development remained far from fully utilized and they have been pushed further back into the social hierarchical system. SHG has become a powerful medium to make women empowered and realize their potential. We have been promoting SHG for as long as a powerful vehicle for women’s emancipation. The SHGs are formed and strengthened through different capacity-building inputs and training. After they mature, we link them to different financial institutions like banks and MFIs. We train the women on business opportunity identification, business planning, resource mobilization, market linkage, etc to make them entrepreneurs. We help them establish

micro-enterprises based on their skill and opportunities. These SHG members can mobilize credit for their business activities from financial institutions. They are also taking advantage of various government support schemes through OLM and other district agencies and are able to earn their living in a better manner. They are also linked to better markets in the townships to sell their products.

Eradication Of Child Labour:

Any action plan on child labor should begin with knowing who the child laborers are. Identification and eradication of child labor are not always easy. There the first task for the panchayats to identify and survey the child labor situation in their respective areas. In its Zilla Parishad, Panchayat Samiti at Gram panchayat level a door-to-door service can be conducted to prepare a database on the occurrence of such incidents. For information on door-to-door visits Gram panchayats, Teachers, Anganawadies Worker (AWW) and NGO with help from the Government. Social mobilization requires a broad social alliance and strategic partnership between children, families, teachers, professionals, Social workers, and political polarities and consumer groups. Campaign committees consisting of a member of these groups can be formed to carry out the process of mobilization. Building the Capacity of Frontline Health Workers:

SCR seeks to build the capacity of frontline health workers in their role as health providers to rural communities. We provide training on how to detect and screen for malnutrition, how to respond to malnutrition, how to best counsel pregnant and lactating mothers. We are working to achieve the SDG target of ending malnutrition in all its forms by 2030.

Community Health:

Mother & Child Health annually is estimated that 44,000 women die due to preventable pregnancy-related causes in India. There are some states in India where maternal mortality is still a significant problem. Often, in these same areas, there is also a high mortality risk for children under five. Both mother and child mortality are often linked to one of the following: malnutrition, failure to access basic healthcare, and preventable diseases. Lack of proper nutrition has resulted in a high percentage of pregnant women being found to be anemic. Anemia during pregnancy can cause serious complications. It increases the risk of premature birth, of having a low birth weight baby, of health and developmental problems for the baby, and can increase the risk of serious health problems for the mother. Malnutrition amongst children is also a serious problem. Lack of proper nutrition affects children’s mental and physical growth and is responsible for more ill-health than any other cause. Malnutrition is keeping families in a vicious cycle of poverty, making it even more difficult for them to overcome the hurdles to development. Many

women in rural, poor areas have depended on local traditional birth attendants for years. While many of these attendants may have experience delivering babies, they are unprepared for complications during labor and are only involved during labor and delivery. Sadly, signs of poor maternal health or complicated labor are missed, leading to a high mortality rate for mothers and their babies. When there is a miscarriage or the baby is stillborn it is accepted by the family as the way it is. Some mothers lose multiple children and never know the reasons why. Many of the mothers in remote areas are unaware that they can utilize free, professional medical help throughout their entire pregnancy that could likely avert tragedy.

Nutrition management for Mother & Child:

Annually, it is estimated that 44,000 women die due to preventable pregnancy-related causes in India. There are some states in India where maternal mortality is still a significant problem. Often, in these same areas, there is also a high mortality risk for children under five. Both mother and child mortality are often linked to one of the following: malnutrition, failure to access basic healthcare, and preventable diseases.

HIV & AIDS:

To respond to the issue of HIV & AIDS towards halting and reserving its spread and promoting care and support.SCR has been addressing the issue of HIV & AIDS since 2008. People infected and affected with HIV & AIDS are assisted in overcoming stigma and discrimination, living with dignity and confidence in facing the future, and encouraging them to reveal their HIV status. The programs are being implemented in the Laxmipur Koraput dist and Rayagada block, Rayagada dist.

Water & Soil Conservation Management:

The effects of climate change are being felt now through an increasing number of heatwaves, more frequent flooding and droughts, and changing weather patterns. For subsistence farmers, this adds to the burden they already carry. Farmers are often dependent on the monsoon arriving in a particular time frame and expect a certain quantity of rain. They are not prepared for a changing climate. The consequences of climate change can be disastrous for farmers – ruining their crops, depleting their resources, and forcing them into abject poverty. Many farmers are losing hope and giving up on agriculture, migrating to the cities to find income, and leaving their families behind. SCR builds community-based methods to address negative impacts of climate change and facilitates community-based practices to respond and adapt to actual or potential impacts of climate change. We strive to see farmers with a renewed hope in agriculture, earning enough to provide for their families and with extra to sell in the market. We want to see families

living together and communities working together. We encourage farmers to diversify their crops and to plant seeds that have a greater resistance to drought. We teach farmers how to harvest and store rainwater. SCR is also involved in advocating on the issues of Climate Change, focusing on mitigation and adaptation along with the Climate Action Network.
