Natural Resource and Drinking Water Development:

SCR Organization water resource management to provide safe drinking water. It was set up not only to provide water but also to focus on environmental issues among rural and tribal communities. The provision of potable water in Rayagada block and Gunupur Block of Rayagada District in states of Odisha, among the tribal communities produced a positive result in terms of a significant decline in water-born diseases, previously rampant in villages. It has led to improvement in general health. women who previously walked a long distance to fetch water benefited from having more time. Now the opportunity to save drinking water and profitable activities opened kitchen gardening.

Public Health Care Through Awareness:

In the majority of rural areas people still do not have access to health assistance, Reasons huge areas and solutions are few. A recent survey concluded by our team reveals that depending upon the regional average of 20% of men and 30% of women in Chandbali in Bhadrak, Dist. Rayagada Block of Ryagada, Dist. Laxmipur of Karaput, Dist. is affected by pneumonia, water-related diseases, and worm infection. The villagers are not aware of basic health practices and personal hygiene. The villagers fall ill frequently of contagious diseases and water-borne diseases, particularly during the rainy season. Diseases like Malaria, Diarrhea, stomach problems, skin rashes, and infection are quite common to people, particularly young children and older persons. We are organizing health check-up camps for these communities. The health camps include qualified doctors and health practitioners who examine the patients and diagnose their problems followed by prescriptions. Free medicines are also distributed in the camps following the prescriptions.

The medicines cover wound dressings, stomach problems, malaria, skin problems, fever, and other such diseases which are prevalent. In case of detection of serious diseases, we refer the patient to the district medical hospital. If necessary we make arrangements to transfer the patient to the district hospital and facilitate treatment. We distribute IEC (Information Education Communication) materials, posters & leaflets among the community members particularly women to make them sensitive to the issue and take preventive measures to avoid health problems particularly take care of personal hygiene. We also educate adolescent girls and women about menstrual hygiene and dos and don’ts to keep themselves safe. We regularly organize and Stage Street plays to drive home the points and make the awareness process stronger and acceptable in the long run.

Population Education:

SCR works on family planning to control population growth. The voluntary SCR received training from the natural family planning association of India. The trained volunteers contact the newly weeded couple mostly in Chandbali and advise them to maintain the minimum family norms for a happy life future. The rural Chandbali is out of reach of contact by health personnel. SCR is trying to take up this difficult task in the near future. Most of the people in rural areas don’t know about family planning due to looking for proper education on the women blindly believe the faithful on the contact SCR providing coaching to the couples for eradication of population growth. The adverse effects of more children accompanied with early age marriage are quite evident in the tribal families. As the newlywed young couples are not mentally and physically ready to shoulder the responsibilities of taking care of offspring nor are they economically sound to meet the expenditures, they are put under tremendous pressure and face acute poverty situations. The health of the new mother also deteriorates fast with multiple pregnancies quickly

one after another. The health situation is also deteriorating in the absence of nutritious food and absence of health facilities. We are helping the parents of young children to understand the negative effects of early age marriage and unplanned large families. Young adolescent children are also informed about the advantages of family planning and physical and mental readiness to shoulder the responsibilities of married life.

Economic Empowerment through  S.H.G:

The Self Half Group (SHG) generally has 25% members maximum of 10 members minimum each group selects among its member’s three leader president, secretary, and treasurer. The president conducts the meeting every month. The Group members save a regular deposit amount of RS.50/- to 100/- rupees Max. & Min every month in any Nationalized Bank of India in our area branch SCR organization have 216 self-help group SHG our SCR organized at Chandbali Block, of Bhadrak Dist., Laxmipur Block of Koraput dist. and Rayagada Block of Rayagada Dist. The Group rotates the money to the needy members for various purposes. At a specified low interest rate of 2%. This activity also saves the way for the socio-economic empowerment of women to build confidence in what they could stand on their own.

Campaign against Child Marriage and Trafficking:

SCR has been working with the Campaign against child marriage and Trafficking Government to bring about better health, hygiene, and nutrition among mothers, newborns, and children under the age of two in remote and vulnerable areas.

Behavioral Change Amongst Mothers:

We work to create awareness about the benefits of institutional delivery and we encourage expectant mothers to utilize full antenatal care. We advocate for mothers with young children to fully immunize their children to prevent disease. We teach about the importance of a nutritious diet and promote kitchen gardens. SCR works with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as well as the Ministry of Women and Child Development to improve maternal and child health. At present, SCR implements four Mother and Child Health projects in remote parts of Odisha.

Livelihood & Food Security:

Many rural households are dependent upon a farm or non-farm-related activities for their subsistence, often managing to make just enough to sustain their families. But over time, the non-sustainable exploitation of natural resources has eroded productivity, reducing their livelihood security and increasing their vulnerability. Add on to this, the increasing recurrence of natural disasters and the lack of alternative livelihood options you find that the many rural poor are being pushed towards abject poverty. They often struggle on, unaware of the government entitlements that are meant to alleviate the pressure. Some farmers give up on farming altogether and move to the city in search of employment. SCR assists in promoting sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable, tribal, rural, and urban communities. SCR seeks to address the issues hindering development and to empower communities towards self-reliance. We do this through capacity building, skill development, vocational training, and the promotion of small businesses. SCR trains farmers on the scientific method of farming, land conservation, and rainwater harvesting, to

sustainably increase their crop yield. We encourage and assist in the formation and strengthening of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and we link these SHGS to formal credit sources and government support to promote entrepreneurship. In addition, SCR works towards providing clean drinking water which helps them to overcome health issues. We work to restore hope and dignity to the lives of farmers and laborers in vulnerable communities.

Community contingency Plan & Relief Emergency:

Natural disasters affect our Areas i.e. Chandbali Block, Bhadrak Dist. Kedrapada Dist and Balasore District all too frequently. Every year, somewhere in India, there is either flooding or drought, which disrupts people’s lives and causes widespread chaos. The poor, disabled, and women-headed households are often hardest hit by these disasters. Their homes, often located in less desirable, flood-prone areas and made with temporary materials, are often damaged and even destroyed. Their means of earning a living are disrupted as a result of a natural disaster and, without income or any significant savings, it is very difficult for these families to start again. In the wake of a natural disaster, the poor struggle to purchase food or rebuild their homes. SCR works to alleviate the suffering of the people affected by disasters by providing food, household articles, and psychosocial care. Since 2003, SCR has been involved in helping people rebuild their lives in the aftermath of natural disasters. We have helped in restoring land for cultivation, helping people regain their

means of livelihood, assisting with the reconstruction of houses, etc. Beneficiaries are selected according to the need across sections of the community and care is taken to ensure vulnerable communities are included such as disabled, aged, etc. SCR coordinates and networks with government and other disaster management organizations for effective relief operations. SCR’s relief and rehabilitation work is in line with international humanitarian standards.
